Creating a Cavity
Quite honestly the best illustration to demonstrate how to create a cavity. Plaque is a biofilm that sets onto the tooth surface, building up from underneath your gum line. Plaque is made up of bacteria, and when dietary sugar is added, acid is produced. The addition of acid on a healthy tooth may create a cavity by eroding the enamel down to the dentin, and quite possibly the root.
Fungus also contributes to an increase in acidic production. Typically, a healthy sub-gingival flora will inhibit fungal growth, but a sugar loaded inflammatory diet can create a shift in the microbiome that allows fungus to grow, intensifying the effect of the cavity. A lack of fluoride does not cause cavities.
